It's kind of interesting that you want to learn to play the piano now, isn't it? If you are like so many people, your childhood was filled with finding every possible way to avoid learning to play the piano. And now, you are wishing you hadn't been such a smart aleck back then and paid attention instead. Then you would already know how to play the piano!

If you're like me, you're probably thinking to yourself, "It's too hard to learn to play the piano." The thing is, once I started, I realized that it wasn't half as hard as I expected it to be and it's actually a lot of fun. If you've always regretted not learning to play an instrument, it's not too late. Learn to play the piano and take back that regret.

There are now so many more options for you to choose from when deciding how you will learn to play the piano. The traditional model of working with a private teacher is still an excellent choice; the relationship may keep you more motivated and you may be more likely to complete exercises with the expectation of meeting with someone on a regular basis who is expecting you to have progressed.

On the other hand, you can also find plenty of resources that will help you learn to play the piano on your own such as videotapes, books and audiotapes.

Internet-centered approaches include:

* Interactive instruction that provides information then allows you to hear how music will sound, using a sound file.

* Teaching software that comes complete with a keyboard that attaches to the computer so theory and practice are coordinated.

* Interaction with a live teacher through the use of a web camera.

Whichever method you select, piano teachers agree, that you will still need to practice in order to develop muscle memory, fluidity and confidence. However, many of the new options available can make those pratice sessions stimulating and fun as well as useful.
